Software Engineer

ThinkCERCA is looking for a software engineer to join our team and build software that helps educators strengthen their students' writing skills. You will share responsibility for maintaining the application and building new features based on customer feedback and internal stakeholder priorities.

Requirements

Communication and collaboration is a large part of what we do, whether it is through the code we write, the time spent pair programming, or in meetings with other members of a cross-functional team. So, we are looking for a strong communicator that has been working professionally as a software developer and has experience doing one of the following for 2+ years:

  • Transitioning an application to an Object-oriented CSS system;
  • Javascript & React application development;
  • Ruby on Rails application development.

As a small team, all of us need to touch every part of the stack at some point, so you should be comfortable and interested in learning more about any areas you have less experience in. If that sounds exciting to you, then we would like to get in touch. To reiterate: we are looking for people with prior professional experience in software development, at the moment we do not have available positions for recent bootcamp or college graduates without the requisite experience.

Remote employees are welcome, many of our coworkers live in different cities around the country, and even those living in Chicago regularly work from wherever they feel is most comfortable. Experience as an educator, or in the educational application market, is a definite plus, but not at all required. We strongly encourage candidates with different backgrounds and experiences to apply, diversity and inclusion are part of our guiding values.

Responsibilities

  • If you worked with us, here are some of the things you may have done last week:
  • Paired with another developer to work on a feature based on wireframes or fully designed comps.
  • Written unit and end-to-end tests for a new workflow in the application.
  • Created a new GraphQL mutation.
  • Organized a quick google hangout with a designer to clarify a product interaction.
  • Participated in agile ceremonies: daily standups, grooming/estimation sessions, sprint planning, and retrospectives.
  • Refactored and deleted outdated code while upgrading gems and npm packages.
  • Collaborated with a product manager to break down a new feature into cards for the team to work on.
  • Determined the origin of a production bug and deployed a fix.
  • Reviewed another developer’s pull request.
  • Met with a Data Scientist to document the flow of data through the application.
  • Discussed technical limitations and opportunities with product stakeholders while outlining potential new features.
  • Spent a lunch hour helping non-tech coworkers interested in learning how to code get a project started and learn about html.

As you can see, engineers here get to touch all parts of the product development process. You should be prepared to interact regularly with other parts of the organization and spend some amount of time in productive meetings. We also pair program for the majority of our work. ThinkCERCA is an environment that is focused on professional growth; managers are expected to help their team members put together a personal development plan to help guide their experiences for the year, and review it regularly with them. We provide opportunities for our engineers to expand both their programming skills as well as the kind of other skills that are expected of senior developers or engineering managers.

Benefits

ThinkCERCA offers a competitive salary, a 401k retirement plan, life insurance, medical, dental, and vision insurance, and a pre-tax commuter benefit for Illinois-based residents.

All full-time employees can take advantage of our work from home policy once their onboarding and training are complete.  As a full-time employee, you will also be invited into our Unlimited PTO policy.
